Summer Reading Essay
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks is a novel about a man and a woman who fall in love in a short two weeks and attempt to keep their love alive while the man is battling abroad in the United States Army. John Tyree, the main character, is a military man of honour who knows right from wrong and would be willing to do anything to help others and save them from situations where their rights are being refused. These personality traits are the reasons he would support a boycott of the upcoming Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The situation in Russia at the moment is very grave; gays and lesbians are being brutally and unfairly abused for their way of life, something they have no control over. It has been brought up that LGBT athletes may not be allowed to compete in the Olympics because of Russia’s current views and actions towards gays and lesbians in their own country. John Tyree would support a boycott of these games and place them in the hands of a more deserving and humanitarian country because he stands up for what he believes in, is passionate and loving towards other people, and cares for others more than himself.
John would boycott the upcoming games in Sochi because he stands up for what he believes in. He would not let the Russian government get away with their horrific treatment of innocent human beings, but fight for what is right and boycott the games for this reason. He is a man of honour and cares how others are treated in the world. “They didn’t agree on much. In fact, they didn’t agree on anything. They fought all the time and challenged each other every day. But despite their differences, they had one important thing in common. They were crazy about each other.” The simple fact that John is willing to state his opinion on matters against his lover, Savannah, shows he will not stand by and let others get away with something he believes is wrong. “They challenged each other every day” proves he always is stating his opinion and telling others how he feels. This character trait shows that he would support a boycott of the Sochi Olympics. Since the treatment of the gays and lesbians in Russia is so unjust and evil, John would not sit by and let these Olympics happen, his willingness to care for others more than himself would urge him stand up for what is truly right and move the games to a more deserving country.
John could not possibly accept the Olympics being held in Sochi after all the controversy that has erupted there, because he cares too much for other people and how they are treated. Someone who cares more about themselves than others would not boycott the games because they do not care about the situation there and the people who are being affected. It would be the opposite with John because he always puts others before himself. John is in the military because he is a humanitarian, he wants to serve his country, and he wants to fight for what is right even if that puts him in the face of danger; This simple fact proves the point that he would not sit by and allow the innocent people in Russia be persecuted for their lifestyle choices. “True love means that you care for another person’s happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be.”. In Dear John, John has to choose to let Savannah move on with another man because she deserves to be happy. As much as it destroys John, he allows it to happen because he loves Savannah so much and all he wants is for her to be content. He puts her before himself because he is so passionate and has so much love for her.
John is a humanitarian person who is caring and loving towards other people, no matter the hardships they face, the disabilities they may have, or their beliefs. “I love you, not just for now, but for always, and I dream of the day that you’ll take me in your arms again.”. This quote proves that John is capable of a lot of emotion and his love for others has the capacity to be very strong. He would not be able to watch the events unfold in Russia and innocent people being treated poorly without having deep-rooted opinions and emotions towards the issue. “The saddest people I’ve met in my life are the ones who don’t care deeply about anything at all.”. I think John seeing an act against humanity such as that in Russia would evoke this sense of passion in him and he would see boycotting the games as the best option for the global community and for the gays and lesbians of Russia. He would not let Russia hurt it’s people and be rewarded with hosting the Olympic Games.
John Tyree is a man of compassion, one who would stand up for his beliefs and care about the outcome for other people. He would boycott the Sochi Olympics because his ethics would evoke these characteristics, not allowing him to stand by and watch the events unfold. He would not want Russia to be rewarded for their hideous acts against humanity by hosting one of the most prestigious and joyful events in the world. John is not afraid to state his opinions and would not believe in letting the Russian government get away with their unjust treatment of human beings because he cares about others too much. He is a military man and does not simply sit by and watch events unfold, he gets up and does something about it. For this reason, John Tyree would boycott the Olympics and move them to a more deserving host country where everyone will be treated with respect.
